" SIBERIE - INDIA: along the footsteps of the gulags "

05 June 2006 / Transsiberian, Russia.

“ The rhythm of the tracks and vodka ”

It is 20 h Moscow time (18 h in France), and 4 o’clock here. We are in now in CHITTA, during of the train stops. It has been four days since we boarded the Transsiberian which travels by day and night…slowly, taking it’s time.
A local proverb said « the transiberien is slow, in order to get it to move faster, you should drink some Vodka! ».
We are however excited to travel in this mythical train because allows us to slowly assimilate to the place of the prisoners.
We are now crossing the plains of TRANSBALKAIIE, which is crossed by the BAM railway, which itself was built by the prisoners.
We passed the Baikal lake where we spotted plates of ice, something which confirms that the climatic conditions we will face further north are even more difficult.
Upon our arrival in Vladivostok on June 08th, we will take the plane to reach the city of Magadan. As there are floods which do not allow us to make the last leg of this journey by train we will have to go by plane.
The team is getting along well and we are all in good shape.
The landscapes are incredible.
Thanks to our remote team in France.

Cyril and Guillaume by telephone.

NOTE
The transsiberian train goes from Moscow to Vladivostok, running approximately 9 198 kilometres. The first part of the track was finished in 1916. In fact this track runs along another track which was finished in 1904, but which the Russian did not consi
der secure enough after the Russian-Japanese war of 1904-1905 because the track crossed through Manchuria.
