“ In the first footsteps of the first prisoners ”

We had planned to leave in the early hours in our van to head for Kadikchan, a city abandoned 700 km north of MAGADAN. But the events did not play in our favour. The road to Sousousman has been destroyed because of the floods along several hundres of met
ers. On top of that, the van that we borrowed last week requires maintenance that will take upto 2 days.
On June 28, after 3 consecutive days of being stuck, we finally head for Sousouman where we stay with the parents of Kostya (our fixer). The first burst tyre requires us to stop off for a picnic on the piece of land (300 m) that separates the road from f
rom the factories of the chalamoc camp. We finally arrive in Kadikchan on June 29th around midday.
The starting point of our journey on foot was symbolised by crossing the river and especially by photo of the old collapsed wooden bridge. The construction and restoration of these roads (not tarmacked) and bridges, that we are not using, was the work of
the Zeks (the goulag prisoners).
We said an emotional goodbye to Kostya and his wife and completed our first kilomters. We stopped after only 10km, it was 6pm, but we wanted to test our fish catching skills. Cyril managed to catch one, which we split and cooked together with some Chines
e noodles. We went to sleep with a smile on our lips.
This was no longer a dream, we were really starting the long trek of the escapees.
On June 30th we were aiming for the abandone village of Abykalah. The 30km that separated us from the village were quite tough to walk through. We arrived quite late and quickly started our good night of rest.
