" SIBERIE - INDIA: along the footsteps of the gulags "

16 June 2006 / Magadan, RUSSIA.

“ Discovery of a dead city ”

We took the plane in Vladivostok for a two hour flight North, the flight is incredible and unbelievable in a Tupolev 154M without safety belts and with meal trays carried by not very kind stewardesses. We fly over of the sea of OKHOTSK still frozen to la
nd finally on an ancient military base. There is no need for any special ceremony as we are still in the same country, regardless of the 2500km just covered by aire. Kostya, our fixer, is waiting for us and offers us his full preparedness and willingness
to help.
In this old Russian airport feelings bump into each other. This is about the coming together of almost two and a half years of work, it is difficult to stay untouched of seeing the hammer and sickle of the region of dead persons.
After about 50km of road, glued together on the windows of the truck, we arrive in MAGADAN in a thick mist which is characteristic of the city. Except the centre, everything else appears abandoned, we discover a city in decline. Even the terror of Gulags
reaches the capitals… It is terribly depressing.
And as in Vladivostok the japanese monopolise all second hand equipment trade, the market is flooded with Toyota and other cars from the rising sun.
What have we really come to do here?
Thanks to great planning of Kostya, we have to meet the mayor, his assistant, a prisoner and the grandson of a prisoner who has as funnily enough was born in one of the camps, which is rather rare. They agree to grant us interviews.
Moreover we have a piece at the local television and we will also give an interview to the newspaper called The "PRAVDA MAGADAN", which is the little brother of the newspaper created under Lenin in 1918.

On June 11th we meet with Francois-Marie and Pascal at the airport to go north of the country for a little tour to finally come face to face with the reality of the camps. The weather is nice, but cold (2 degrees at night and 6 during the day). It is Ju
ne 16th, you all are probably in a t-shirt whereas we are in our fleeces on the roads towards the camps.
Nowadays, it makes nice but cold (2 Degree at night and 6 in the daytime). We are on June 16th, you are surely in T-shirt, we are in polar and on the road of camps.
